The KINGSPORT ART GUILD CHALLENGE!

"Kick the Can"
by Leslie Davis

This collage will not only be used for our Challenge!  Project but also will be entered in the Upcycle category of the Members’ Show coming up in October and November.  I cut the label off a can of tomatoes and glued it on the canvas and then painted the can around the label.

The Kingsport Art Guild Challenge!

I have mentioned in the past newsletter that one of my goals as president is to increase members’ traffic on the Kingsport Art Guild website and educate our membership about possibilities on the internet.  We are introducing this project as an exclusive for art guild members in the hope that it familiarizes our membership with online participation.  It is based on the website http://dailypaintworks.com.  This group introduces weekly challenges to its members.  Each week a new challenge is posted and artists from all over work on the assignment and submit their work.  It is not a contest, all skill levels and media are represented, and it‘s a wonderful way to participate and be connected to other artists. Click on the CHALLENGE button at the top and you can sign up to receive their daily emails.  What‘s nice about this is that it‘s very informal and you can choose whether or not to participate each week.

In that vein, we are offering our own Challenge!   A project will show up every two weeks.  You may choose to participate or not for any particular challenge.  You may work in any medium, any size, any surface - it‘s strictly up to you on how to express that assignment. Each will last two weeks and then another will be issued.  We would like you to photograph your work, crop out any unnecessary background, and email it to Steven Reeves steven@stevenreevesart.com in a jpg. format who will place it in a special section on our website.  Please submit your name along with the title and medium so he can list the information alongside your work.  If you are unfamiliar with photographing your work or do not know how to use a digital camera, please ask another member or officer who will be glad to assist you.  If you bring your finished project to Paint In on Tuesdays we can arrange to have someone there to photograph your work.  Just let us know.

Challenge! #1     Kick the Can September - October

Our first challenge is called “Kick the Can”: draw, paint, or collage any can - it can be new, dented, crushed, anyway you want to display it.  Do it any way you desire - it doesn‘t have to be realistic! It‘s an open ended project!

Challenge! #2     Eat Your Vegetables!!  October – November

Pick a vegetable and draw, paint, collage, assemblage – any medium you prefer- it directly from life.  Don’t use photos.  This is good practice to really see what’s in front of you.  Take a good look at your subject and you will notice colors and shapes you hadn’t observed before.  When finished – eat them!!!!
